Chairman's Report January 2021

As we move into 2021, we still face a serious threat from the Covid-19 until we receive our shots of the vaccines that will be available. There is a light at the end of the tunnel however the tunnels end may well take some time to reach. So, at this time we must remain cautious and adhere to whatever guidelines are in operation at the time.

Issues in the town

In recent weeks the Committee has been aware of a number of issues regarding the bins, a lack of gritting on pavements and pathways, and the patching of the potholes in Collier Street car park. Our concerns have been passed on to the council officers and hopefully can be resolved.

The quality of the patching in Collier Street car park just prior to Christmas looked pretty poor and I hope that our town centre Cllr’s will have a look and contact the council officer who was in charge of this with their views on the quality of the work carried out.

We have also been made aware of to incidents at the shopping development on the Mill Brae. One involved one of our ex-members and more recently a near miss at the entry to the development that could have proven very serious. Iain has been in contact with the council officers and we wait to see what action will be taken.

There has also been some coverage in the press regarding a rise in the amount of vermin being reported in the town. If you have any reports let us know and we will forward them on to the council officers.

Spateston Tenants and Residents Association had contacted us via Iain in December to ask what help and advice we could offer after the collapse of their plan to turn the old nursery building on into a Spateston Community Hub. While we have agreed to speak to them Iain has asked for more detailed information on what they have already done and what future ideas they have in advance of us meeting with them. When this takes place, we will report back with more details for discussion by our membership.

On a brighter and more positive topic Thorn Athletic Chairman Mark McGee took part in an interview with the Chit Chat with Jed and Co podcast. Great to see such a success story in Johnstone getting some coverage an I’d urge you all to give it a view.
